Tom SpringLike many photographers of my generation, I was drawn to the images of Ansel Adams and others from the pages of Look, Life, National Geographic  and other magazines.  The stunning prints captivated me.  I still look to the photographers of National Geographic as well as many of the current masters for inspiration.

After getting discharged from the Air Force during the Viet Nam era, my wife and I took up backpacking.  Our trips took us to the Sierras, as well as the local desert, and mountains of Riverside and San Diego Counties.  At that same time, I bought my first 35 mm SLR camera.  The camera accompanied us on just about all of our trips.  Often we’d come home and put on slide shows for family and friends.  My interest started peaking toward a more artistic approach in the late 1980’s.  I returned to college in the early 1990’s to specialize in the study of photography.  Shortly after that, we built a   darkroom in our home, complete with sinks, enlarger and traditional printing tools, which is still operational today.

I’m drawn to the large landscape and yet I try to capture something intimate within the big picture.
